Blotter: Driver accused of hitting city employee in street

Denton police charged an elderly man with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon Thursday morning after he allegedly struck a city water department employee with his car.
The city employee told officers that he was working with other employees at the corner of Hinkle and Amherst streets just before 10 a.m. The repair project was set up behind cones and warning signs, he said.
He saw a car exit a parking lot and head toward the repair area. He began signaling the driver to stop and back up, he said. The driver signaled back at him but continued to come toward him, according to the report.
The employee said he moved to the other lane and continued to try to signal the driver to stop. Instead, the driver accelerated toward him. The employee said just as the car was about to strike his legs, he jumped onto the hood. Then he rolled off and fell to the street. The car left the scene.
Employees wrote down the car’s description and its license plate number, as well as descriptions of the elderly couple inside the car.
Officers who ran a computer check went to the listed address. There was no car there but they spotted it parked at a store across the street with the male driver inside. The woman was inside the store.
The man was argumentative and uncooperative, according to the report. He said his car was stopped and the worker jumped on the hood for no reason.
Another officer talked to the woman inside the store. She said her husband was frustrated because he wanted to drive down the street and was prevented from doing so. She said he “ran over” the worker because of his aggravation.
He has “anger issues,” the man’s wife said.
